Mit Bildung gegen Antisemitismus? Möglichkeiten und Grenzen antisemitismuskritischer
Bildungsarbeit

Education Against Antisemitism? Possibilities and Limitations for Antisemitism-critical Educational Work

This article discusses the relationship between education and antisemitism. The aim is to develop perspectives for a successful educational work against antisemitism. To this end, the question, to what extent antisemitism is a »problem of education«, is being explored. Afterwards, an overview of the current Austrian situation of instructions on the topic of antisemitism in school, youth work and adult education is presented, which unavoidably remains fragmentary, because of a lack of data. From this, some pitfalls in educational work on antisemitism are derived. The contribution focuses on a normative definition of antisemitism-critical educational work as well as on practical suggestions, which also include an excursus on islamized antisemitism. The article points out that education per se does not protect against antisemitism. However, educational work, which takes antisemitism seriously as a structural and individual phenomenon and addresses antisemitism in the historical longitudinal approach and differentiates between the various forms, can significantly contribute to a reduction of antisemitism.

Nanotechnologie.

Nanotechnology. Technology Hype and Democratisation Efforts

In the 2000s, nanotechnology became the subject of state funding programs across the OECD and beyond. In the nanotechnology policy field, two characteristics stand out: on the one hand, the international »hype« about nanotechnology, that is to say its discursive construction, characterized by excessive future promises and expectations that justify massive funding programs and drive financial, scientific and innovative dynamics. Secondly, specific features of the nanotechnology field are the prominence of dialogical practices and ideals of participatory democracy. The literature even talks about a »deliberative« or »participatory turn« in the nanotechnology field. The article critically examines this turn. The following questions are being discussed: First, why do we observe the proliferation of participative-dialogical practices specifically in this field? Second, why does this trend manifest itself in different countries at about the same time?

Biographical Narratives for Personal Assistance: Fights for Access, Enablement of Self-Determination and Empowering Self-Constructions

Personal assistance stands for an innovative model of support, interested in enabling users to practice a self-determined life. In Austria, personal assistance was established in the 1990s – as a result of the collective struggles of the disabled people’s movement. However, until today, there is no comprehensive system of supply of personal assistance – despite the demands of the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which was ratified by Austria already back in 2008. Employing a biographical perspective, this article aims to research the implementation of personal assistance in Austria, from the perspective of disabled persons. Relating to empirical data, biographical relevance of personal assistance, experiences of access and the impact of this type of support on the self of the users are being reconstructed. Results are discussed in relation to normative demands of the CRPD.

On the Apparent Paradox of Belonging to the Middle Strata of Society. A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of the Austrians’ Subjective Social Position from 1993 to 2016

Survey data, for the period 1993 to 2016, show that the vast majority of the Austrians consider themselves as belonging to the upper half of society and that this self-assessment has become more prevalent over time. Contradicting this trend, income and wealth inequality have grown, and the real incomes of some population groups as well as the chances to reach a higher position through education have decreased. Drawing upon classical theories of stratification and concepts of social comparison, the article analyzes the determinants of the Austrians’ subjective social position. The analysis is based on representative survey data from the Social Survey Austria (SSOE) and the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) as well as on a probing-study. Our results demonstrate that classical stratification criteria explain partially the subjective social position, but also that deprived respondents emphasize their »best« criterion in their ratings, whereas wealthy respondents level down their social position. Consequently, most of the Austrians consider themselves belonging to the middle strata of society.

Die in »Fifty Shades of Grey« dargestellte Sexualität enthält überwiegend sadomasochistische Inhalte.

On the Social Construction of Sexuality. Sadomasochism and »Fifty Shades of Grey« as Current Phenomena of Society

In 2012, the three-volume novel »Fifty Shades of Grey« was published, which became quickly a world bestseller with more than 150 million copies sold. Central questions of this article refer to the meaning of the enormous response to this book, and whether the huge success of the novel indicates a sexual change. With the concepts of social constructionism and sexual scripts, the social sciences offer plausible explanatory models for such changes in society. The sexuality portrayed in »Fifty Shades of Grey« contains predominantly sadomasochistic content. Until the second half of the 20th century, sadomasochism was considered to represent a perversion, and being hugely tabooed. Nowadays, sadomasochistic content is increasingly spread by pornography, films, other media and the internet. The huge success of this sadomasochistic novel could be an indicator for such a collective development.
