Steffen Biller: Forest -- From Climate’s Saver to Climate’s Patient – An Analysis of the -Attribution of Meaning in the German Climate Discourse

The social perception and evaluation of climate change differ greatly and have changed markedly over the past decades. As elsewhere, here too, print media play an important role in the social construction of reality. In this article, I describe crucial differences between various interpretations of climate change presented in the media. Adopting the approach of the »wissenssoziologische« discourse analysis, I assess and compare different ways in which the impact of climate change on forests in Germany is being described and interpreted in print media releases of the two years of 2001 and 2009. The analysis reveals how media coverage of this topic has changed over a period of almost a decade.
