Ruth Simsa : Impact Measurement of Nonprofit-organizations. Backgrounds, Potentials and Limits

The trend to measure impact increasingly affects nonprofit-organizations, which want to contribute to the common good, like social security, political change or community building. Currently, they face increasing pressures to measure and monetarize their impact for further receiving necessary funding and legitimization. The article deals with backgrounds, potentials, limits and consequences of this development. This contribution critically discusses one of the currently most strict and most prominent methods of impact measurement, the social-return-on-investment (SROI)-analysis. Its operation mode is linked to an ideological background. Consequences of impact measurement are finally discussed with regard to nonprofit-organizations and society.
